I’ve barely been back to California since I moved away. I spent the weekend with friends in Santa Cruz and remembered just how much I love it there.
The trip has me daydreaming of a bicoastal life (isn’t that the dream for every New Yorker?). In my dream I go there at least one week each month and barely work, surf almost daily, and even cook my own meals. The pace is so much slower than New York and it actually felt good to not be busy. I wrote maybe one email the entire weekend.
For years I’ve said I would never move back, but there is a reason they say to never say never. Back in New York it’s cold, gray, and busy. I want to go back to the warm, blue coast where no one seems to be worried about anything.
We stumbled upon a surf competition in Santa Cruz. From the top of the cliffs, this looks like an adult surfer, but he was probably no older than 15. I’m terrified of surfing any wave larger than 3 feet, but this kid was killing it in 8-10 foot waves that crashed right into the cliffs.
