In the depths of this miserable winter in New York, I’ve come to appreciate a great pair of gloves. I have a bin at the foot of my bed that contains an assortment of hats, scarves, gloves and mittens. In that bin are no less than twelve pairs of gloves (I have cold hands, okay?). After testing out several different gloves this winter the six above have won out. Each with their own distinct purpose.

From 12 o'clock clockwise.

These tan leather gloves were a birthday gift and are what I consider my workhorses. They are pretty warm, especially if I’m moving around, they are best on shoots (I can press the shutter release on my camera with them on). They work for those times you actually have to use your hands, but want to wear gloves. Not the warmest pair I own, though.

These fingerless gloves (also a gift, do I complain about my hands being cold all the time?) with the mitten flap were my everyday wear in the beginning of winter, but below about 35 degrees Fahrenheit they don’t really keep my hands warm enough. What I love about fingerless gloves is being able to use my phone.
from Kate Spade last year (this year’s here)

Yet another gift are these fleece gloves. They work for higher temps and lots of activity. I can exercise or take photos and carry things, but again, not great under 35 degrees.
probably from REI

The next two come as a combination. The mittens are from ASOS, their pom poms long lost. I wear the mittens over my black $3 drug store gloves and find the combination unbelievably warm. I also like that I can take off the mitten and have almost full use of my hands and then slip the mitten back on when I get too cold.
from Rite Aid and ASOS last year (similar)

This final pair, if you can believe it, were also a gift. These are snowboarding mittens and good for snowball fights, sledding and snowboarding. They aren’t great for really anything else as you completely lose the use of your hands, but are the best bet for sustained periods outdoors.

I’ll leave you with one of the Internet’s greatest gifs: Kitten Mittons

I can’t believe I didn’t post this ages ago. My amazing roommate Carly and I created this crest for our apartment which we named the Gowanus Clubhouse.

I’ve noticed over the past month or so there are a few short phrases that I continuously repeat to myself. One of them is “Be On Time.” I know I just talked about this on my blog, but I repeat this to myself between 3 and 17 times every day. As I grow up I notice more and more the importance of being prompt.

When you show up on time, it shows

  • that you are professional
  • that you care
  • that you are considerate
  • that you value the time of others

Alternately, when you are constantly late it shows

  • that you are a child
  • that you don’t care
  • that you don’t need or want this meeting / job / etc.
  • that you don’t value the time of others

So, while, I’m not perfect and I still am late from time to time. 2014 is the year that I will be on time.

I’ll be sharing throughout the year more of these mantras that I consistently find myself repeating.

If you know me, then you’ll know that I’m crazy about backing up my data. I used to carry two hard drives around with me everywhere. My friend Jonnie coined the phrase, “The Bekka Code: backup thrice or pay the price,” and he wasn’t kidding.

I’ve got a new system that allows me to go drive-free when I’m out and about and still have three copies of my data at any time.

1. Time Machine
I have always been a fan of Apple’s built-in Time Machine software. If you do nothing else, get yourself an external hard drive (I use these) and set up Time Machine to do your backups. You’ll thank me when your hard drive fails (which it will!!!), or when your laptop gets stolen. I’ve restored my entire system from Time Machine backups at least four times and never had an issue, it’s easy to use and trustworthy.

2. Crash Plan
This is an automatic backup service that runs in the background and sends your data to a server. This is the kind of backup that would help you if your entire house burned down with your laptop and external drives still inside.

The other great thing about Crash Plan is that you can set it to back up external drives in addition to internal drives. If you are like me and store large files on an external drive these will backup to Crash Plan as well.

3. Dropbox
I don’t actually use Dropbox as a backup of my entire system, but my data is safe there and I can use Dropbox to restore lost files from my computer’s hard drive. I generally keep all current files in Dropbox and move them out every few months.

Dropbox is also my service of choice to back up the photos from my iPhone. Get the app on your phone, sign in and you can set up camera uploads from there.

// Mad props to my friend Jonny Gotham for teaching me about Crash Plan thus freeing up a lot of space in my purse, I think he was sick of me carrying two hard drives everywhere I went.
